La Peste

Forming in 1976, La Peste was part of the first wave of punk and probablly one of the first punk bands in Boston. (Fill me in if I'm wrong!) They played shows at The Rat & Cantone's alongside others like the The Ramones & The Damned. In 1977 they recorded a session in a loft that bassist Mark Karl was renting. 1978 saw the release of their Better Off Dead single. They would eventually disband sometime in 1979. You can find the A-side to the single and a few live tracks from 1979 here. The tracks found here are taken from the Better Off La Peste 1977-1978 CD. More great 70's punk to come!

The Proletariat

One of my favorite bands to derive from Boston, The Proletariat began playing shows in 1981. Unlike other bands in the area like Gang Green, Jerry's Kids, Negative FX, DYS, & SSD, they weren't focused on merely fast and fierce. They wrote intelligent songs with powerful lyrics and well-thought out music. They made their debut with tracks on the This Is Boston Not L.A. comp. in 1982. The first LP, Soma Holiday, was released in 1983. In 1985 they released the Marketplace 7'', which has to one of my favorite songs from them next to Indifference. The B-side was never released on an album while Marketplace was included on the Indifference LP, which was released later that same year. Their whole catalogue is worth tracking down. Great stuff!

The Dicks

What the hell can I say about The Dicks that hasn't been said already? Classic Texas punk rock. Won't waste my time with any background info, if you don't know who The Dicks are then you're just an asshole! First we got a nice 10" record of theirs aptly named Ten Inches. It contains a great live recording from the Punk Rock Prom at the Armadillo World Headquarters in 1980. Six great songs with great sound. Great recording of All Night Fever too, one of my favorite Dicks tracks. Next is the Hog 7''. This one contains outtakes from the original Hate The Police Session, also recorded in 1980. I find myself favoring this 7'' version of Pigs Run Wild over the Kill From The Heart version. Hate The Police sounds almost identical to the original 7'' version. Check them out for yourself! No Trend

Another great and highly underrated band from D.C., No Trend's earliest incarnation came about in 1981. They went under the name The Aborted and played one gig with Government Issue. Drummer Michael Salkind left for college for a year. Upon arrival back in D.C., he first played drums for United Mutation. In late 1982 he was kicked out and then went back with The Aborted's singer Jeff, who had now started No Trend. They've often been called D.C.'s Flipper. Though they do bear some similarities, I like No Trend a hell of a lot more than Flipper. They definitely had a knack for pissing people off. Bleak, shrill rants a top a sludging noise. Beautiful. In 1983 they went into the great Inner Ear Studios and recorded a nine song session with Don Zientara. Only three of these songs would go on to be released on their first 7". They would go on to put out a few more records with different members, all of which are pretty rare. You can find their first full length here. First three tracks were released on the 7'', the other six went unreleased. All nine tracks come from the Early Month's CD on Teenbeat records. Ground Zero

Ground Zero was from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They played alongside bands like Man Sized Action, Rifle Sport, & Willful Neglect. Their first output was on the Kitten compilation (Reflex C 1982). The self titled debut album was released in 1984 (Reflex I). After listening to both you would most likely deny the fact that it's the same band. From a solid Husker Du style hardcore, to a spastic, funkish, almost Minutemen approach. There's even a nice cover of the Peanuts song. Now there are a few cheesy kinda goofy songs, but can you blame them for trying to have a sense of humor? So if anyone enjoys this Midwest obscurity, let me know and I'll post their second record.

Here's another one for all you fellow Chicago freaks out there. If you ever come to decide one day, "I think I'll get hopped up on horse tranquilizers and start a band", the outcome might be similar to End Result. The first listen of their album (Ward, Ruthless Records 1985)will definitely be difficult, but upon the second and third you begin to appreciate their weird sort of sludge that still manages to pierce yours ears in some titillating way. The two instrumentals, Opening and Shameless, will win your favor right off the bat. Strike Under and Naked Raygun come to mind. As for the rest, you'll have to battle all the way through each one to find some enjoyment. I believe their only other output was two tracks off the Master Tapes Vol II comp. (Affirmation 1983) Both in the same vein as the album. Enjoy!(As much as you can.)

False Prophets II

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I've been kinda busy/lazy. Just got a new LCD too, so I've been kinda glued to that shit. Beautiful. Anyways, posts will resume as normal. Also, any requests are welcome. If I have them, I'll gladly post them. Sorry Rg, don't got the Detonators LP. If anyone out there does, please share. Speaking of requests, I believe I had one a while back for the False Prophets LP. This is one of those albums that holds it's own against the test of time. I can never get tired of listening to it. So many great songs that aren't even bound towards any single style. Like I mentioned in their previous post, Overkill & Blind Obedience were re-recorded for the album. Both versions rock. I think the best track here is The Taxidermist. But songs like Somebody React, Scorched Earth, & Baghdad Stomp aren't too far behind. Download, listen to some real, original punk rock, and be thankful!
